TopKnot Salon Erica Cruz
2. What services or products do you offer?
We have 6 talented hairstylists that specialize in hair color, cutting, smoothing treatments, and extensions. We also have two talented estheticians specializing in waxing, spray tans, and lash lifts and lash extensions.
3. How long as the business been open?
We will celebrate 2 years in May!
4. What inspired you to start your own business?
I’ve always wanted to be a hairstylist, since I was a little girl. I knew one day I would be a salon owner. When the opportunity presented itself sooner than expected, I had to run for it!
5. What did you do to develop the skills to start/run your business?
I went to cosmetology school my senior year of high school. I didn’t want to waste any time. I went straight into assisting at a salon 2 weeks after high school graduation and the rest is history! I attend multiple education events and constantly stay on top of the latest education every year. One important key to success in this industry is to never stop learning and growing!
6. Share with us one of your biggest success to date?
I am so grateful to have had success thus far in the industry. I’ve grown a full clientele, and also became a National Educator for John Paul Mitchell Systems. But my proudest achievement thus far would have to be my baby, TopKnot Salon.
7. Share with us one of your biggest challenges to date?
Owning your own business will always have its challenges… one in this industry we acquire a lot is to be taken seriously as business owners. I think a lot of people “friend zone” their hairstylist, and expect a lot out of them. In reality we are running our own businesses and deserve boundaries, respect, and life outside of work just like the next person!
8. What is the nicest thing a customer has said about your business?
The biggest compliments are always when people compliment the look and vibe of TopKnot. My team and I have worked hard to create our unique environment and I couldn’t be more proud!
9. Who inspires you to keep going?
My family and friends inspire me to keep going every day!
10. What advice do you have for someone who wants to start their own business?
For whoever wants to start their own business: good things come to those who hard work. Owning your own business will never be easy, and you will never make everyone happy. But the most important element is to be passionate about your business and when things get hard, work that much harder and it will pay off!
